My
Old Blog (written in 8/04)
In an attempt to jump-start my writing (I'm having trouble figuring
out exactly who my audience is, among other problems), I've joined
the blogging craze. Of particular interest to people who like what
they see on this site:
Is
Your Diet Based on "Supply" or "Demand"?
- (8-7-04) One way I like to categorize weight loss diets is
by whether they attempt to manipulate the body's supply of food
(think: Weight Watchers) or its demand for food (think: Atkins or
Ornish).
What
I Eat - (8/5/04) This is what my own diet consists of -
not a recommendation, as I believe every body is different when
it comes to diet.
Something
for Everyone...To Hate - (8/5/04) I believe my ideas about
weight loss and diet have a sound basis - but I've found not everyone
likes my ideas!
A little over
two years ago (June of 2002) I decided to make a change in my life.
I developed a series of diet experiments to try to figure out what
way of eating and other changes would work for me on a permanent
basis. I wanted something that would be easy to follow and would
help me feel my best, as middle age was bringing some unwelcome
changes in terms of energy level, aches and pains, etc.
These days, I'm
35 lbs lighter, and feel much much better! I also have been spending
a lot of time pulling together knowledge about diet, exercise, nutrition,
and behavior change, and related areas. I have a great interest
in medical research and have written other
health-related Web sites. I'm putting this out there to see
if the method I've developed and knowledge I've acquired will help
other people.
My plan is to
get a "rough draft" of the site up soon, begin an informal
newsletter, and, when (and if!) there is interest, begin a support
mailing list. By some time in April, I hope to move this to a "real"
domain site.
The purposes of
the site:
1) To provide
solid scientific information about diet, nutrition, exercise, and
other health-related issues.
2) To integrate
this information with a proven, research-based method of behavior
change. (This has been called Stages of Change theory, or the Transtheorectical
Model of behavior change. It is discussed in the book Changing
for Good by Prochaska, Norcross, and Diclemente.)
3) To provide
a method to help people find the diet that helps them feel at their
best. If weight loss is a part of this process, the emphasis is
on making this into a permanent change, rather than a "diet".
4) To provide
long-term support for making these permanent changes in the areas
of diet, exercise, and other helpful lifestyle and attitude changes.
The approach I
use is to build a solid understanding of your own body, step by
step, and build in the support to make slow, but steady changes.

down the scale we go, despite our best efforts. What are the causes
