The Way of the Turtle - The Slow and Steady Path to Better Health

Cooking Tip: Seasoned Salt

Commercial seasoned/seasoning salt is way overpriced, and there are many recipes for homemade on the Web. I keep a large container (that used to contain the commercial kind) on my counter and use it instead of salt when I'm cooking, for sprinking on veggies, whatever. It's a constantly evolving mixture. I usually start with a recipe, but double or triple all the ingredients except the salt. I always add some ground chili pepper for some kick, and then as time goes on, I throw in spice mixtures I bought but don't seem to be using, herbs and spices that are getting a bit old (standard rule is to keep them around no longer than a year because they lose potency), or more garlic or onion powder, two of the staples of any seasoning salt.

Additional tip: If you use spices a lot, get them in bulk at a fraction of the price of the little jars. Most health food stores have bulk herbs and spices, or you can order online. My favorite is Penzey's.

Some seasoned salt recipes. Remember, you don't have to use as much salt as it calls for (double or triple everything else), and modify to your own tastes.
